This article begins with a summary based on reports from the AP, Al Jazeera, Axios, and The Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal citeerde anonieme Amerikaanse functionarissen.

- Einde samenvatting

There have been reports of five explosions on the Iranian island of Qeshm; residents also stated that they saw two aircraft flying overhead. Iranian authorities have not yet responded to these reports.

Explosions have also been reported near Bandar Lengeh, close to the Strait of Hormuz. According to eyewitnesses, these originated from the direction of the sea.

Explosions have been heard in this area on several occasions over the past few nights. Iranian officials have sometimes attributed these to military activities or actions taken by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against vessels accused of using unauthorized routes through the strait.

The Wall Street Journal cited anonymous U.S. officials, reporting that these incidents are part of a series of limited operations that Washington has carried out "covertly" against Iran in recent weeks—even as President Trump simultaneously spoke of the possibility of a diplomatic agreement.

The attack occurred after Trump had downplayed the likelihood of a renewed war with Iran—in the aftermath of Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections. The U.S. Department of Defense referred inquiries to U.S. Central Command, but a U.S. official told The Wall Street Journal that the administration is taking consistent action against threats to American forces in the region.

The strikes targeted Iranian units that were deploying anti-aircraft missiles against U.S. interests, a U.S. official told the Associated Press on Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity. Iranian state media reported that explosions had been heard on the island of Qeshm, which lies at the entrance to the strategic shipping lane.

Oil prices rose during early trading on Tuesday following reports that the U.S. had attacked the Iranian island of Qeshm. At 01:04 GMT, the price of a barrel of Brent crude was up 48 cents (0.5 percent) to $105.25.

- End of summary

Has the war resumed? Yes—and here is why:

A "defensive strike" is an operation intended to repel an enemy attack, buy time, or protect one's own interests. What does that look like in a war against Iran?

There are no American interests or assets present within Iran, so there is nothing to defend in that regard.

What, then, does the phrase "surface-to-air missiles aimed at American targets" actually mean?

Surface-to-air missiles are air-defense weapons which Iran uses to bring down threats from the sky. What kind of threats? Bombers! The U.S. wants to prevent Iran from shooting down American combat aircraft launched from aircraft carriers in the Arabian Sea. The strikes were a precautionary measure. The U.S. did not carry out a defensive strike, but rather a preemptive one—a tactic I know from the Israelis.

In the wake of the midterm elections, Trump has effectively resumed his war against Iran, rather than waiting until after those elections to do so.

THE NEGOTIATIONS

One cannot truly speak of negotiations, but rather of communication via messages sent to a mediator (Qatar), who in turn forwards them to the intended recipient. This form of communication has been ongoing since last April—much like the exchange of letters.

Last month, Vice President J.D. Vance was tasked with drafting a letter to the Iranian security chief, Mohsen Rezaei. The letter was sent to the Qatari mediators, who then passed it on.

While the exact contents of the letter remain unknown, its nature is clear: it was an overture containing points that the Iranians have labeled "unacceptable demands"—not a genuine offer. The letter’s existence leaked to the American press.

When asked by the press whether he had instructed Vance to resume peace talks with Iran, Trump said:

"No. It’s like this: they need help with medical supplies and various other things. He [Vance] asked what I thought about it. I said: if you want to do that, that’s fine. Essentially, it boils down to delivering supplies to help people who are ill."

It is rather strange for Trump to claim this is a "humanitarian matter" when the Iranian official to whom the letter was addressed oversees a very different portfolio.

And then, he reveals something else:

He implies that medical goods destined for Iran are also being blocked. That constitutes a war crime.

What is the current situation?

Trump has resumed his war, even while "negotiations" are underway. It bears a certain resemblance to the approach taken by the Israelis when they do the same—insisting on a ceasefire that meets their own specific demands. The latter is for a next article.
