What is the difference between protesting and demonstrating?

  • Het doden van leden van de groep;
  • Het toebrengen van ernstig lichamelijk of geestelijk letsel aan leden van de groep;
  • Het opzettelijk aan de groep opleggen van levensomstandigheden die erop gericht zijn de fysieke vernietiging van de groep, in haar geheel of ten dele, teweeg te brengen;

Protesting involves showing or making it known—visibly and audibly—that you disagree with something, whereas "demonstrating" can carry multiple meanings. In the context of this article, however, demonstrating refers to expressing or making visible and audible one’s own opinion, position, or stance.

The "Beyond the Red Line" demonstrations are described as global protests against the passive stance taken by various national governments regarding the war in Gaza and the numerous war crimes that Israel continues to commit.

The first such demonstrations took place in the Netherlands and Belgium in May 2025. The central theme of these events was the genocide in Gaza. Personally, I view these manifestations as both a protest and a demonstration.

In the Netherlands, we have an organization somewhat comparable to the American AIPAC—though it should be noted that CIDI (Centre for Information and Documentation Israel) has no influence on the Middle East policy of the current Dutch government. It is better described as an extension of a foreign power, much like other organizations we see here that maintain close ties to the governments of their respective home countries, such as Morocco and Turkey.

On its website, the CIDI writes the following regarding the "Beyond the Red Line" demonstration:

"The big question is: what will the 'red line' be now, given that there has been no large-scale fighting since October 2025? The conclusion is that this action is primarily a call for a further boycott of Israel, organized by a motley and peculiar coalition of groups."

I find both this question and the accompanying "conclusion" to be abhorrent. Large-scale combat is not a prerequisite for genocide to occur.

There are established criteria used to determine whether a situation constitutes genocide. This does not require large-scale combat; rather, it requires a span of time—an uninterrupted period—characterized by the systematic application of one or more of the following criteria:

  • Killing members of the group;

  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction, in whole or in part;

  • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.

When I apply these criteria to the evidence—comprising more than 30,000 collected videos, documents, reports, and articles—the reality since October 7, 2023, emerges as follows:

The Israelis systematically employ armed drones, resulting in the calculated killing of women, men, children, and the elderly—all of whom belong to a single group of people: the Palestinians. In April 2024, discovered documents and videos revealed that the Israeli military uses artificial intelligence in its "warfare." Two systems are involved: Lavender and Gospel. A year later, I also uncovered information regarding the deployment of an AI system called "Where Is Daddy."

The documentary *NAZA*—created by two Israelis and which I saw in a cinema last month—not only confirms the use of AI as a weapon, but also clearly demonstrates that severe physical or mental harm is being deliberately inflicted upon Palestinians in Gaza.

The intentional imposition of living conditions calculated to bring about the physical destruction of the group—in whole or in part—manifests in two ways:

Palestinians in Gaza are subjected to extreme deprivation: no food, water, medicine, electricity, or fuel. The lack of fuel, in particular, affects hospital generators that rely on diesel.

The Israeli military has a dedicated unit for this—COGAT—which has been carrying out such activities for a long time; this is evidenced by two documents I discovered concerning the maximum number of calories permitted for each Palestinian in Gaza—the first document dating back to 2010, the second to 2012.

The starvation of Palestinians in Gaza stemmed from a premeditated plan, devised by the Israelis in October 2023 and further developed with Cyprus in November of that year, aimed at sidelining UNRWA’s humanitarian aid—well before the organization was alleged to have ties to Hamas.

This plan took shape through discussions and meetings between then-Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and the Cypriot government. In January 2024, U.S. President Joe Biden joined the initiative by commissioning the construction of a pier off the coast of Gaza, and four months later, EU leader Ursula von der Leyen enlisted European aid organizations to facilitate the delivery of relief supplies.

The other component of this two-pronged strategy is the prevention of population growth in Gaza. It is for this reason that, in December 2023, the Israeli military destroyed the Al-Basma Medical Center—the largest fertility clinic in the territory—resulting in the loss of approximately 4,000 frozen embryos and 1,000 sperm and egg samples. This constitutes what can be described as "gender-based killing." And that is not even accounting for the hundreds of entire families that have been wiped out.

Yes, CIDI—your misleading "conclusion" conveniently avoids addressing what the Israelis have done and continue to do. This is entirely in line with the Israeli mindset: never talk about what you have inflicted upon the Palestinians; instead, talk about what you have achieved.

In the context of CIDI’s absurd conclusion: never talk about what you have done to the Palestinians, but rather talk about what others seek to achieve against you.

Isn't that what’s known as *hasbara*?!
